The Social Security and mutual health insurances

To benefit from student social security you must submit the necessary documents to establish your personal situation on the day of registration. The age limit is 28 years on October 1st of the university year, with a possible postponement for certain studies under certain conditions (medical specialization and doctoral studies). This limit can be postponed by the duration of your study interruption due to illness, accident compensations for more than 6 months or maternity. If your parents are not wage-earners (artisans, shopkeepers, liberal professions, etc.) you may benefit from your parents’ social security coverage until your 20th birthday.

You must produce evidence on registration. This social security coverage must last the whole university year until September 30th included.

However, if your parents are wage-earners and you are under 20, you must join the student social security scheme (independent beneficiaries) but without paying the social security premium.  Those students, whose partner is affiliated to another social security scheme and with a regular professional activity making the insured person and his/her family eligible for the sickness and maternity insurance, are exempted from joining the student social security scheme. Student couples must have two separate social security insurances. The affiliation requires the payment of an annual flat-rate premium set by ministerial decree. Students who do not belong to any of the previously cited categories are entitled to join another insurance scheme.

Social security does not reimburse all medical expenses. A complementary health insurance covers the various risks in personal life. You can join one of the previously cited student mutual insurances.

The extent of your insurance coverage is linked to the type of contract. Moreover, technological studies and, under certain conditions, practical work and training courses are covered by the student insurance scheme as for occupational accidents (ArticleL.412-8 of the Social Security Code). Regarding training courses abroad, students are well-advised to take out complementary insurance especially covering medical assistance and repatriation costs.

If you cannot benefit from the student coverage (if you are a foreign student, if you are above 28 years old, ...), several companies can offer you a specific health insurance.
