Summary
Starting from a model of orthographic processing that distinguishes between retinotopic letter detectors and word-centered sublexical orthographic representations, I will describe recent empirical research that systematically compared encoding of identity and position information for random letter strings (e.g., PGFMR) and sequences of familiar symbols (e.g., £ ? % < &). This research reveals important differences in the way these two types of stimuli are processed in a variety of paradigms designed to investigate different types of perceptual and attentional phenomena: crowding, perceptual matching, change detection, and exogenous cueing. The results provide support for the two distinct mechanisms for coding letter position information that are postulated in our model of orthographic processing.Lieu : Salle de réunion du LPP, H432, 4ème étage,
